Matthew Drive Extension
Project
|
The Matthew Drive Extension
Road Construction Project, which was recently completed,
involved the construction of a 4-lane major
roadway that runs from the intersection of Matthew
Drive and New Salem Road to an intersection at Route 40 and
Fan Hollow Road, a distance of 4,088 L.F. (0.774 mile).
The intersection of Route 40 and Fan Hollow Road
is an access point for the Mon-Fayette Expressway,
which is under construction by the Pennsylvania
Turnpike Commission.
While planning and
preliminary engineering for the project took place for several years,
actual construction on Matthew Drive
Extension began in 2007. The road was fully completed
in 2008.
Funding for the project,
which cost approximately $7.5 million, was provided by the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania
Turnpike Commission, and the Fayette County Redevelopment
Authority. Tremendous support and advocacy for the
project was also provided by local, state, and federal
officials, including the Fayette County Commissioners and
the South Union Township Supervisors.
